Repair or replace? The honest version

Most fence-repair calls come down to one question, and the answer decides everything: is this a localized failure or a fence that's reached the end of its life? We'll tell you straight, because the wrong answer is expensive either way. Patching a fence that's rotting along its whole run wastes your money; tearing out a fence that needed three posts and a gate re-hung wastes even more.

A good rule of thumb: if the damage is confined to a section, a run of posts, or the gate, repair almost always wins. When more than roughly a third of the posts move at the base, or the boards are soft along the length of the fence, you're usually paying twice if you repair. What actually fails on a Lowcountry fence

Storm and wind damage

After a storm we see whole sections pushed over, panels torn loose, and trees or limbs down across the line. Wood fences often fail by the section, which is good news: a shadowbox or privacy fence is designed to be rebuilt a bay at a time without touching the rest. We can secure a damaged run quickly to keep a yard or a dog contained, then come back for the permanent repair once materials are in.

Leaning and heaved posts

A leaning fence is almost always a post problem, not a panel problem. Posts fail because the footing was too shallow, the concrete cracked, or the wood rotted at the worst possible spot: right at the ground line, where the post is alternately wet and dry. Resetting a post properly means a correctly sized and depth footing, not a bag of dry mix poured in a hole. Set it wrong and you'll be calling someone again in two seasons.

Sagging and dragging gates

The gate is the hardest-working part of any fence and the first thing to fail. A gate that drags or won't latch is usually telling you the hinge post has shifted or was never braced for the leverage a swinging gate applies, not that the gate itself is bad. Depending on the cause we re-hang it, re-square the frame, add a diagonal brace or a drop rod, or reset the hinge post. On a wide gate, the fix is often converting to a double gate or a heavier post rather than fighting the physics.

Rust, rotted hardware and salt-air damage

This is the coastal special. Salt air attacks the metal parts long before the posts or boards give up: hinges seize, screws bleed rust down a good cedar board, and fasteners simply disappear. A lot of what looks like a failing fence is actually failing hardware, and swapping to hot-dip galvanized or stainless hardware buys years. On wrought iron and steel, a rusted-through bottom rail or post base is a fabrication repair, which is where our own shop comes in.

Ironwork repair and mobile welding

Because we run a fabrication shop, iron repairs that other fence companies subcontract or decline, we do ourselves. A sagging wrought-iron gate, a broken rail, a post sheared at the base, a rusted section that needs cutting out and re-welding, most of it can be fixed in place with our mobile welding rig, often in a single morning, without dismantling the whole fence. Downtown, where the Board of Architectural Review generally won't permit removing historic ironwork, repair isn't just cheaper, it's usually the only approved path.

Repairing a fence you didn't install

You don't need to know who built your fence or what it's made of. Most repairs are to fences we didn't install, and matching an existing picket profile, board width or rail style is routine, part of the shop's everyday work. If a component is genuinely obsolete we'll tell you and offer the closest honest match rather than pretending it's identical.
